Gone Fishin’

What better way to start off my return-to-SF than a review of a charming Sausalito fish restaurant, which leaves little to the imagination with its name, Fish. Located about a 25 minute walk from the main drag of Sausalito, Fish is more than worth the added travel time, and as one of Sausalito’s only 4+ Yelp rated seafood restaurants, I was glad I gave this place the effort it needed.

What I expected was a sit-down seafood restaurant with white tablecloths and ice water that fogs up the glass. What I got was a crowded outdoor patio with wooden tables, and an order-at-the-counter line that looped out of the door. Although the line was a bit of a setback (you can’t really expect much else on a sunny summer Sunday) the atmosphere made for a fun, fish shack vibe that begs to be accompanied by ice-cold beer and fresh oysters.

With a menu range offering crab sandwiches, fish & chips, and fresh catch of the day, I opted for classic fish tacos, which came served on soft corn tortillas with slaw, cilantro, and three accompanying sauces. I wasn’t expecting the fish to be the color it was, but don’t let the grill marks fool you – the fish was tender and by no means overcooked. The lime and all three sauces combined to make a pleasant backdrop for the fish and enjoying the meal with a front row seat of the ocean made for one hell of an authentic experience.

My friend’s salmon salad was a nice meal as well but lacking in ‘zsa’ I guess you could say – and was by no means a standout. (The crab sandwich looked good – maybe a bit bread-heavy – but I’ll have to make a trip back to give that a try!).

To top off the meal I finished with an oyster (my newest obsession – thanks west coast!), which was fresh and tasty. Did I mention all their seafood is sustainably caught and it’s a message they’re continuing to support through other activities? (Check it out on their website here: http://www.331fish.com). The sustainability maybe helps explain the heavy price tag attached to most items – for instance the lunch crab sandwich is $25 and oysters are $3 each. It’s also cash only so come prepared with those tips in mind!

Don’t let these things deter you however, and if you’re feeling like fish – check out Fish. Happy Sunday Funday everyone!!
