One word: Sushiritto. It’s a concept that few are aware of, and yet the world needs to know. It’s so novel, so daring, so out-of-the-box, that it causes some to frown in disgust. Alright, time to get to the point: a delicate mix between sushi and burrito, Sushiritto is a tantalizing attack on the taste buds bringing together fresh ingredients, spicy aioli’s and crunchy goodness.
The place is unassuming, save for the hectic lunchtime-lineup, which quickly reaches out the door and around the corner at peak hours. One word of advice: come early! Don’t be that guy stuck in the lineup at primetime 12:45. Although with SF weather there are worst things than waiting outside in line. I digress…
If it’s your first time at Sushiritto, I recommend ordering the Geisha’s Kiss, otherwise known as the Tuna. Actually maybe it’s only me who calls it the Tuna, but still, can this catch on already? The mix of fresh yellowfin tuna, piquillo peppers, lotus chips, cucumber, avocado and sesame white soya combine to make one tasty burrito. It’s fresh, healthy, and filling.
Another fan favourite is the Salmon Samba with oven-baked salmon, tempura asparagus, cucumber, avocado, pepitas, wasabi dust (whatever that is…) and Teri-Mayonesa (is it mayonnaise? Is it Teri? Do I care?). (If you’re impressed with my memorization skills, don’t be – I looked up half the ingredients online at their website here: http://www.sushirrito.com/food/sf).
And if you’re not into fish, there are non-fish alternatives, which include meat like pork (Porkivore), or chicken (Mayan Dragon), and a veggie alternative as well (Buddha Belly). With so much choice I have yet to conquer the menu but Sushiritto remains one of my favourite lunchtime spots.
Words of advice: there’s hardly ever space to sit so get ready to take your ‘ritto to a nearby park or venue of choice. Also, unlike pizza, it is possible to over-eat Sushiritto and become sick of it. I advise spacing out your ‘ritto sessions so you don’t end up like Jessica but who am I to tell you how to live your life.
