Modern Vietnamese Eats

The Slanted Door is a warm & trendy Vietnamese restaurant located in the Ferry Building. With a killer view of the Bay Bridge, this restaurant offers the perfect evening for a relaxed and delicious ethnic meal. As always with shared plate restaurants, my family and I ordered way too much and left way too full. On the bright side, I have a plethora of dishes to tell you about and give you the details on what I would and wouldn’t order again.

For the hefty list of appetizers, my family and I narrowed it down to one option from the raw bar, Yellowtail, and two from the appetizer section, spare ribs, and gau choy gow (AKA shrimp dumplings). I’m a huge sushi fan so the Yellowtail was my choice (pictured to the right below). Although it was a fresh and tasty piece of fish, the $20 price-tag lowered my opinion of the dish, and I wouldn’t order this again. Despite being on the pricier side, the fish was fresh and spiced perfectly with Thai basil, shallots and lime.

Probably one of the biggest hits of the meal were the shrimp dumplings. I’m not even a shrimp fan and I thought these were fantastic (pictured on the left). Served warm in a crispy shell the dumpling was the perfect mix of spicy sauce and gooey goodness. I would come back to this restaurant for these alone! Next up on the appetizer list was spareribs. These tasty ribs had an ethnic sauce that mixed well the tender meat.

Can you believe I’m not even half-way done describing the meal? For the mains we ordered catalan farm spicy broccoli, wood over roasted branzino (the whole fish), and cubed filet mignon. Out of these, the fish was a highlight. Cooked perfectly, the tasty fish mixed well with the spicy fish sauce that accompanied it. The broccoli was tasty…I don’t think vegetables can impress me too much so that’s about all I have to say about that, and the beef was just OK. Maybe it was a little lacking in flavour, or just overshadowed but the thousands of other dishes, but there’s not much to rave about for this dish.

All in all, I would recommend the Slanted Door to anyone lollygagging around the financial district and in need of a more up-scale, tasty meal. The view of the sparkling Bay Bridge is just the cherry on top of a top-notch meal.
